EDM is a non-contact machining process that essentially uses electricity to erode metal. To start, we immerse the conductive part and the cutting tool (the electrode) in a specialized fluid called a dielectric. The power supply then generates a carefully controlled electric arc, or spark, between the tool and the workpiece. This tiny, powerful spark melts and vaporizes the material with extreme precision, removing it without ever making physical contact.

How Does EDM Work?

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is based on the electro-erosion phenomenon that occurs during the pulsed spark discharge between the tool electrode and the workpiece (the positive and negative electrodes). During the discharge process, the metal on the surfaces of the electrodes and the workpiece is melted, vaporized, and thrown off by the high temperature, thereby achieving material removal.
