Our facility handles CNC machining and electrical discharge machining tooling services to support our custom extrusion services. The die or tooling must withstand extreme pressure and heat, so H13 tool steel is the standard choice. Engineers design the die with a focus on balance to ensure the metal flows, achieve uniform wall thickness and minimize warping.
Aluminum Extrusion Tooling

Aluminum extrusion is a plastic deformation process that reshapes a heated aluminum billet by forcing it through a steel die. A solid cylindrical log of aluminum is heated to a malleable state and then driven under immense hydraulic pressure into a die opening. As the metal emerges from the other side, it takes on the exact cross-sectional profile of the die, allowing for the creation of long, continuous shapes with complex geometries and excellent structural integrity.
The industry uses two methods: direct and indirect extrusion. In direct extrusion, the die remains stationary while a hydraulic ram pushes the heated billet through it. This creates significant friction between the billet and the container walls, requiring higher pressure but easier handling of various shapes. In indirect extrusion, the die is mounted on the end of a hollow ram and moves into the stationary billet. This eliminates the friction between the billet and the container, resulting in a more uniform grain structure, reduced heat generation, and a lower risk of surface defects.
